A Brief History of a Karagam Puja

A Karagam Puja is a faith healing Hindu religious ceremony.  Karagam denotes a pot or a small vessel that is filled with sacred water for purifactory purposes and associated with the worship of the Goddess Mariamman.  Mariamman’s worship embodies the sacred energies and evolutionary forces of Mother Earth and is done to usher in health and prosperity to devotees.  This is an ancient ritual enacted by Guyanese of Tamil (Madras) heritage and the oral tradition has been passed down unbroken to specialized, chosen religious priests known as Pujaries.
